BARSEY RHODONDENDRON SANCTUARY - West Sikkim

The Barshey Rhododendron Sanctuary lies in the southwest corner of the west Sikkim district. Sandwiched between the Singalila National Park in the south and Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve in the north, this small 104-sq-km sanctuary is at an altitude of 10,000 ft and supports a wide variety of bio-diversity. But the main attractions of the sanctuary are the rhododendrons which bloom in April-May coloring the Sanctuary in wild abandon. There are three points of entry-Hilley, Dentam and Soreng. Visitors generally prefer Hilley since it is approachable by road. 


Note : Being a border state and for some other reasons special permission is to be taken for Indian ( to some areas of Sikkim ). Foreign tourists visiting Sikkim needs to have an Indian Visa. In addition they need a special Inner Line Permit.

How to Reach :

By Air : The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB).

By Rail : The nearest rail is New Jalpaiguri (NJP).

By Road : After arrive at airport / station hire Private Car or Taxi is the better way to reach at Barshey Rhododendron Sanctuary.

Much variety is not possible owing to the remoteness of the area; yet best possible food is provided under strict hygienic supervision. Vegetables come from the organic gardens of the village, chicken from the village farms and fresh honey from the honey collectors' houses.
