Sagar Island also known as Gangasagar  lies on the continental shelf of Bay of Bengal about 150 km south of Kolkata, West Bengal. The island is large — with an area of around 300 kSq Km.  Ganga Sagar pilgrimage and fair, on the day of Makar Sankranti (mid of January), taking place in the Sagar Island lying in the continental shelf of the Bay of Bengal is the second largest congregation of mankind after the Maha Kumbh Mela. In Bengal, this day is  one of the most auspicious time of the year. Thousands of pilgrims from different parts of the country gather at Gangasagar, the point where the holy river Ganges meets the sea. On that particular day of Makar Sankranti, multitudes of Hindus take a Holi dip and wash away all the earthy sins. After having a dip at holy mother Ganges the pilgrims offer puja in Kapil Muni Temple.
